Some studies on carotenoid synthesis.

چکیده
INTRODUCTION Traditionally synthesis is invoked as the final proof of a structure deduced by other means. In the carotenoid field synthesis is being used increasingly as an integral part of structural studies in order to elucidate some molecular feature for which the other evidence is inconclusive or ambiguous. Synthesis also fulfils the very important role of making many carotenoids much more readily available for further investigations than they would be if it were necessary to rely entirely on natural sources. The variety of natural carotenoids presents many intriguing problems in synth esis, and it is impossible in the space of a short review to do justice to all the work which has been carried out in this field in an attempt to solve them. Attention will therefore be largely confined to problems that have been tackled by the group of which I am, today, the spokesman.

Carotenoid synthesis and function in plants: Insights from mutant studies in Arabidopsis*
From a molecular and genetic perspective, the decade of the 1990s was truly unparalleled in the study of carotenoids. A combination of new technologies and approaches allowed the isolation of bacterial carotenoid biosynthetic genes and the subsequent isolation of higher plant homologs based on colour complementation in Escherichia coli. These genes provided a basis for molecular and transgenic ...
متن کاملOxygen does not directly regulate carotenoid biosynthesis in Rhodopseudomonas capsulata.
We examined the role of bacteriochlorophyll synthesis on the regulation of carotenoid synthesis in Rhodopseudomonas capsulata. Strains capable of making bacteriochlorophyll accumulated greater amounts of carotenoids under low oxygen than they did under high oxygen. However, strains unable to produce bacteriochlorophyll did not regulate their carotenoid production in response to changes in oxyge...

متن کاملCarotenoids in the human macula and whole retina.
The carotenoid pigments in the whole human retina and in the macular region were measured quantitatively by high pressure liquid chromatography (HPLC). Approximately a five-fold larger amount of carotenoids was found in the human macula (35-120 ng) than in previously reported work. The dominant carotenoids in the whole retina are lutein and zeaxanthin. Zeaxanthin is concentrated in the macular ...

Carotenoids are synthesized in prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms. In plants and algae, these lipophilic molecules possess antioxidant properties acting as reactive oxygen species scavengers and exert functional roles in hormone synthesis, photosynthesis, photomorphogenesis and in photoprotection. During the past decade almost all carotenogenic genes have been identified as a result of molecu...
